21–27 September 2026 · Sydney & across NSW

Australia's largest grassroots startup festival

Our startup ecosystem takes over for a week – shaped by the people in it. And it's absolutely free.

21–27 September 2026

It's time for our startup ecosystem to step up once again – and this year, it's more important than ever.

Spark Festival is back for our eleventh year – and things are looking quite different this time around.

We're facing into a long period of uncertainty for Australian founders and investors. Government support, certainty over our tax system, R&D tax incentive eligibility and the ongoing legality of AI development in Australia are all hanging in the balance following significant policy announcements, with minimal consideration of the impacts on our ecosystem.

Spark Festival is here to make our community's voices heard, to provide a platform for those who can't pay for access, and to spark engagement across Australia's diverse startup ecosystem.

The program

What’s on during festival week

Every event is free. More are being added each week – where an event says registration is opening soon, check back or join the mailing list and we’ll tell you when it opens.

Opening night

Spark Festival 2026 Opening Celebration — Launch of the Spark Foundation

Monday 21 September · 5:00–8:30pm

UTS Great Hall, Building 1, 15 Broadway, Ultimo

Spark is the home of startups in NSW, and over the past decade every major part of the ecosystem has been part of it. We are launching the Spark Foundation to make our community's voices heard, to provide a platform for those who can't pay for access, and to spark engagement across Australia's diverse startup ecosystem. The night takes a deep dive into the dialogue between startups and government: a look back at this year's interactions between government and founders, what we've done well, and what we need to do better.

Register free Free, but please book – the hall has a limit.

The AI Reality Check: From Hype to Institutional Confidence

Hosted by Tech Council of Australia with J.P. Morgan

The AI market has moved from enthusiasm to scrutiny, and investors and boards now want a strategy that stands up financially rather than a story about AI. Speakers from J.P. J.P. Morgan, 85 Castlereagh Street, Sydney · Aengus Tran (Co-founder and CEO, Harrison.ai), Danielle Haj-Moussa (Investment Manager, Main Sequence Ventures), Kyra Hannaford (Executive Director, Equity Capital Markets ANZ, J.P. Ready to Scale? Running and scaling corporate pilots

Hosted by Treble Strategic

Founders often win the pilot and then watch it stall. The usual verdict is that the technology underdelivered. It rarely did. Proven pilots stall because the organisation was not ready to scale them, and real value and ROI only arrive at scale. In this hands-on workshop, founders run Treble's Strategic Pulse on their own companies in twenty minutes to see exactly where their scaling will break.

Employee claims in the age of AI: what founders need to know

Hosted by Spark Foundation with HSF Kramer

Redundancies and terminations are part and parcel of a high-growth startup as it evolves. But in 2026 founders across Australia have been hit with a barrage of AI-generated Fair Work claims and other employment disputes, often with no reasonable grounds. Two of Australia's leading employment law practitioners on responding to those claims effectively and affordably, and on the employment arrangements that protect a company before one arrives.

Live demonstration against real examples from the room, and a blueprint you could stand up inside a week.

But why? Having a clear strategy for a clear ask for the right capital

Hosted by Tank Stream Labs

Founders ask for capital before they can say what it is for. Anthony Passe-de Silva works through how a business strategy is actually built, how it feeds into short, medium and long-term planning, and where financial capital sits as one input among several rather than the answer itself - so you know which kind of capital you need and when to ask for it. Hybrid: attend in the room or online.

Hamish Sinclair runs the R&D Tax Incentive program at Prime Partners and works across the full life of a claim, from the first eligibility conversation through to documentation and lodgement. Expect real startup examples, the financial and technical pitfalls that catch people out, and what you need to be recording as you build. For founders, CFOs, tax managers and innovation teams.

Where Is Your B2B Sales Growth Actually Stuck?

Hosted by Spark Startup Growth Lab

The answer is not always more leads. Sometimes the constraint is the sales process, the conversion step, or the fact that founder-led selling has stopped scaling. Tammie Lee opens with a self-assessment across lead generation, sales process, conversion and moving beyond founder-led sales, then works through what a low score in each area usually means and what to do about it. Everyone leaves with a diagnosis and two or three priority actions rather than a list of everything that could be improved.

UTS Startups, 3 Broadway, Ultimo · Tammie Lee (Principal and Sales Partner, Founder Sales Solution)

Hosted by Spark Startup Growth Lab

Could your startup survive the scrutiny of a buyer, an investor, an incoming partner or a co-founder separation? A commercial lawyer and an accountant work through a fictional startup going into due diligence and the problems that surface there: gaps in the shareholder agreement, IP sitting in the wrong entity, undocumented loans, unsigned agreements and unresolved founder conflict. Attendees leave with a one-page exit-readiness check they can run over their own company.

Bushwalk with SquareBySquare

Hosted by SquareBySquare

A bushwalk from Waverton Park to Balls Head Reserve, ending with a private heritage tour at the Coal Loader Centre for Sustainability. Being out in nature is a good way to close out a festival week: walking and talking beats sitting in rows, and it makes for a low-key networking session before people head off for a drink. Along the way, Henk and Emely share how SquareBySquare is building an economic model to fund nature conservation, using their own startup as a live case study of what it takes to make conservation work as a B2C business.

Host your event

Host your own event

Most of festival week is run by the community. Maybe you've already got an event idea sitting in the back of your mind. Maybe you've never hosted anything before, but festival week feels like the right excuse to try. Either way, there's a place for you to bring it to life at Spark.

Startup life isn't just pitch decks and spreadsheets. If it brings people together, it belongs at Spark.

If you don't have a venue, tell us – we have a limited number of spaces we can offer, though supply is tight.

You could host

  • Talks and panels – for the ideas and debates worth putting on a stage
  • Workshops – hands-on sessions teaching a real, specific skill
  • Dinners – smaller, conversation-first, no stage required
  • Socials – drinks, no agenda, just the people
  • Pitch nights – for founders ready to put their idea in front of a crowd
  • Roundtables – closed-door, smaller groups tackling one topic in depth
  • Something completely different – a knitting circle, a life-drawing class, a run club

Powered by the community

Spark Festival happens thanks to the people who lean in

Individuals, organisations and institutions give venue, staff, content, ideas and everything in between – and our sponsors keep every event free and open to everyone.
